World Environment Day

A Message from the Dean of the School of Public Health and Safety

Regional crises and increasing pressure on natural resources are exposing humanity to new and complex health and environmental hazards, including epidemics and emerging diseases. These challenges have become some of the most significant obstacles to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Iran is no exception. The country faces a wide range of environmental challenges, from water scarcity and soil erosion to the steadily increasing accumulation of waste. These issues underscore the urgent need to revise existing policies and strengthen implementation mechanisms. Among these challenges, air pollution in metropolitan areas remains one of the most pressing environmental concerns.

Addressing these global environmental challenges makes the theme of World Environment Day 2026, "Now for Climate," more relevant than ever. It also highlights the urgent need to review existing policies and strengthen practical interventions aimed at reducing human impacts on the environment and mitigating climate change.

Achieving these objectives requires the adoption of coherent and integrated approaches that address not only climate and regional risks but also enhance resilience while preserving natural resources and protecting vital ecosystems.

Universities and research institutions play a pivotal role in advancing these goals by generating practical knowledge, and developing innovative solutions to environmental challenges.

Through research and innovation in clean energy technologies and the implementation of circular economy principles, these institutions contribute significantly to sustainable development. By viewing waste as a valuable resource that can be recycled and returned to the production cycle, rather than as a burden, they help reduce environmental pollution, facilitate the transition to a green economy, support the achievement of national climate commitments, and promote a culture of environmental responsibility.

Ultimately, achieving these goals depends on sustained institutional commitment and the effective application of scientific approaches that support sustainable development and long-term environmental resilience.
